How to run a residential assessment

Step 1 – How to set up a new residential assessment

To set up a new assessment, navigate to the folder where you wish to store it, click on create in the top right corner and then select Assessment from the dropdown menu.
The first thing to do is to assign a proper name to the assessment. For this tutorial, type Test Residential Assessment in the input field at the top of the New Assessment window or in the Text space at the top of the right-side panel.

The first choice to be made regards the type of assessment to be run. There are two assessment types plus a further option you can choose from:

  • Dietary
  • Residential
  • Exposure only

The first two radio buttons define the type of exposure analysis to be carried out. The check-box Exposure only determines if the calculations to determine the toxicology risk must be performed or not; when selected, these calculations are not carried out and the assessment results will contain only the exposure levels. For this tutorial, select only Residential.

In the current version of the CARES NG® platform only the non-temporal residential model was implemented. This is a deterministic model and it has three specific timeframes;

  • Short term
  • Intermediate term
  • Long term / chronic

The short term timeframe is selected by default. However, it is possible to choose any other timeframe. For this tutorial, leave the short term option selected.

Click wizard-next in the navigation bar or on Population in the sidebar.

Step 2 – Select the demographics

The wizard contains as default populations the list of the regulatory populations determined by the guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency. You can choose a single population or any combination of these populations.
The residential model does not handle custom populations, so it is possible to select and use only the regulatory populations. Please refer to the page Populations for more information.

For this tutorial, select the populations Children (1-2) then click wizard-next or on Chemical/Toxicology in the sidebar.

Step 3 – Select the chemical / toxicology data

Please refer to the page How to create a new table to create a new chemical table. For this tutorial, create a new chemical table in the My Data folder with the following data and call it Test Residential Chemical Table

Insert a chemical table in the dietary assessment

The assessment wizard does not contain a default chemical table; you have to select the toxicology/chemical data you want to use. Click on Select a file in the top right corner of the white space.

A pop-up window opens; this window allows you to browse the folders within the software and select the appropriate chemical table. In this example, the chemical table Test Residential Chemical Table was saved in the My Data folder. Click on this folder, select the table of interest and then click on select-green

Now you are back in the assessment wizard where there are two new tabs called Chemicals and Toxicology in the Chemical / Toxicology step. The tab Chemicals contains the list of the unique chemical names included in the chemical table just selected. In this example, there is only one chemical called Chemical X.; click on the check-box beside Chemical X to select it.

Then click on Toxicology. The wizard presents you with the rows of the chemical table that are automatically selected by the program. Only the toxicology data related to the populations, time-frame and chemicals chosen in the previous steps of the assessment wizard are deemed relevant.

When you are happy with the selection of the chemical and toxicology information, click on wizard-next or on Products & Scenarios in the sidebar.

Step 4 – Select the product table

In this step the residential assessment requires as input the table with the list of products to be analysed. CARES NG® provides an example of product table to be used to gain familiarity with the system; this table is called Sample Product Table and it is stored in the CARES Data folder. This is the table to be used in this tutorial, hence follow these steps to retrieve the table:

  1. Exit the assessment wizard by clicking on Save & Close in the navigation bar
  2. In the left sidebar of the File Management System, click on CARES Data
  3. Select the table Sample Product Table and click on copy-to
  4. Click on My Data in the popup windows and then press copy to button

Now the Sample Product Table is ready to be inserted into the assessment. Return in the folder where Test Residential Assessment is stored and open it. Click on the step Products & Scenarios in the sidebar. Click on Select a file on the top right corner of the inputs area. In the popup windows, select My data and then Sample Product Table; press select-green

The inputs area of assessment wizard shows now a table with the list of the products’ names and IDs contained into Sample Product Table. Select the products of interest by clicking in the checkboxes on the left side of the products’ names. Once a product is selected, the list of the residential scenarios where the product can be used appear beside the product’s name in green. Click on newnewtable to show the modifiable version of the scenarios list. The scenarios are now displayed into a checkbox list below the product’s name. Select the scenarios of interest.

Once you are happy with the selection of products and scenarios, click on wizard-next or on Handler & Post Application in the sidebar.

Step 5 – Select the handler & post-application parameters

The Handler & Post Application step allows to change the parameters of each combination of product and scenario selected in the previous step.
The residential scenarios can be divided into two sub-scenarios:

  • Handler exposure: it assesses the pesticide dose a subject is exposed to when applying the product
  • Post-application exposure: it assesses the the pesticide dose a subject is exposed to in the period of time following the product application

Hence the parameters can be divided into two groups, handler and post-application parameters, and the wizard presents you with two tabs, accordingly. Two scenarios, Candles, coils, torches and Mats and Impregnated materials, has only the post-application exposure component; only the post-application tab will be generated for these scenarios.

In both tabs the parameters for each combination of product, scenario and population are presented as the final nodes of a data-tree structure; each branch of the tree can be expanded or collapsed to show/hide the parameters, accordingly. The first level of tree branches contains the list of the products selected in the “Products & Scenarios” step; the second level contains the list of the scenarios associated with the products. The final nodes of the tree can be distinguished from the branches by the checkboxes displayed beside the node label; it is possible to exclude any node from the exposure calculations by unselecting them. All the nodes are selected by default.

In the Handler tab, click on the product name, scenario and then dermal or inhalation; the parameter list will appear in the right panel.

In the Post Application tab, the number of levels between the product one and the final nodes with the parameters is different for each combination of scenario and population. In order to see the values of the parameters, click on the product name and then down on all the sub-levels until you have reached a final node; the parameter list will appear in the right panel.

Every parameter shown in the tree has a default value which is displayed in the right-side panel together with the units of measurements. Both the values and the units of each parameter can be modified here. The values must be positive numbers; no other restrictions are placed on them. The list of accepted units of measurements is determined by the parameter.
If you have changed the value of any parameter, click on [Save] before moving to the next step. Click on wizard-next or on Statistics in the sidebar.

Step 6 – Statistics

This step contains the check-box list of the risk indexes that can be calculated over the exposure doses estimated by the residential model implemented in CARES NG®.
The risk indexes available are:

  • Margin of Exposure (MOE)
  • Hazard Index
  • Aggregate Population Adjusted Dose (aPAD)

Please refer to the Aggregate risk and Cumulative risk pages for more information. For this tutorial, select all the checkboxes.

Step 7 – Run the residential assessment

Once all the steps of the wizard have been set up correctly, the run-assessment button in the navigation bar at the bottom of the wizard becomes clickable. Click on it to run the assessment. The wizard automatically closes and you are back in the CARES NG® file management system, in the folder where the assessment was created.

Step 8 – Check the assessment output

After the assessment runs successfully, you can inspect the output.
Click on the assessment file or on the button open-assessment beside the assessment name in the notifications list.
The residential assessment output consists of the following tables displayed as tabs similar to Excel spreadsheets:

  • Handler Results – it contains the handler exposure levels and absorbed doses for each combination product and scenario.
  • Pa Results – this table contains the post application exposure levels and absorbed doses for each combination of product and scenario.
  • Toxicology data – this is a subset of the chemical table; it shows the toxicology data that were selected and used in the assessment

Click on Inputs to view a summary of the data and options selected and used in the assessment. From this window, it is possible to download all the output tables. Go to the section Export tables and click on the name of the table you want to download. A pop-up window opens giving you the possibility to change the settings of the csv file and to download the tables. When you are happy with the settings, click download-green
